By Nathan Meunier Like many students, I didn't pay close attention during the dull moments in history class. However, I doubt the first group of European settlers to permanently colonize North America had to contend with tentacle- adorned aliens toting laser blasters.
The decision to mash- up early American history and sci- fi creepiness is an odd one, but indie developer Final Form Games' creativity pays off in Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony. This intense bullet- hell shooter is soaked in stylish 2. D strangeness and delivers some seriously frenetic arcade action. Jamestown's zany setup takes place in the 1. Century – except in this alternate- reality version of historical events, the colony is located on Mars and alien forces have teamed up with Spain to wage war against the British colonials who've settled there. You play as Sir Walter Raleigh, a rogue who narrowly escapes execution, hops into a jet fighter, and heads off with guns blazing to clear his good name.
It's definitely weird to be blasting away at swarms of flying alien creatures while British troops fire musket lasers at foes in the cornfields below, but the well- crafted 1. Beautiful story vignettes sandwiched between stages and sharp- looking menus show off the small development team's meticulous attention to detail, and the multi- layered scrolling scenery beneath the onslaught of swirling gunfire steals the show. Piloting a spacecraft through Jamestown's short top- down stages is a wild ride punctuated by frequent blasts of dizzying bullet patterns and dynamic foes that change tactics rapidly. Offering a good mix of options to suit different tastes, each of the four unlockable ships you can hop into has a unique attack pattern and a special secondary firing mode. The default ship can swap out small laser fire for a bigger constant laser blast that slows your movement down but delivers a heavy payload. Other ships let you detonate your streams of bullets, aim a secondary blast in any direction, and even launch massive orbs that steamroll through foes.
Enemies drop cogs to collect for purchasing extra features and upgrades, though these pickups are also a means to boost your score and stay alive longer. Nabbing the golden goodies fills a meter that lets you trigger a special "Vaunt" maneuver for a short time.
Vaunting temporarily deflects bullets, increases your damage, and adds a score multiplier. While it's a fun move to engage early on, its use is crucial for making it through the tougher levels on higher difficulty settings where the insane bullet dodging reaches its hypnotic peak. This mechanic pairs well with the cog collection component to give you something else to do beyond cutting down aliens and robotic drones. It also pleasantly intensifies the gameplay during crazy moments where you're frantically trying to build up the meter before the next massive burst of bullets annihilates your ship. There are only five short stages to motor through, each with their own spectacular boss- fights, but they're brilliantly designed.
It also takes some work to unlock them all, since some are only available after your beat all of the previous levels again on a higher difficulty. The excitement really ramps- up on the hyper- intense Legendary, Divine, and Judgment difficulty settings, and going back to try out already beaten stages with new ships is a lot of fun too. I dig the way Jamestown nudges you into replaying levels to amass cogs and access additional content. There's quite a bit to unlock, including a gauntlet mode, a hardcore difficulty mode, new ships, and multiple tiers of special challenge missions that change up the gameplay rules to add a whole new dynamic.
It was enough to keep me playing for hours, and that's not even taking into account multiplayer options. Don't panic. Some players will bemoan Jamestown's total lack of online multiplayer co- op.
It's a bummer, to be sure, but playing the campaign cooperatively with three other players on a single computer – using the keyboard and mouse or a few extra game controllers – still offers a cool, different flavor of action. As long as there's at least one player still alive in the fight, any fallen comrades are revived after a short time, and picking up special tokens brings them back instantly. This makes for some twitchy pressure- cooker situations when the screen is filled with bullets and your wingmates are eating it left and right. Staying alive long enough to bring them back in the nick of time will make you feel like a champ. It's an awesome twist on the challenging gameplay.
